Knight in shining armor insect
Check out this handsome insect that flew across the playground and landed on the sandbox cover! Haven't had time to identify it yet. The body was at least as big as a quarter.
I don't think it looks quite like a Kentucky squash bug. I don't think they have that diamond marking. But squash bug is a pretty loose term -- it might very well be a Texas squash bug.
It was the last day before our first real hard freeze. I wonder if they change color at the end of the fall. The folded wings were silver, with the black "diamond" body underneath. Its humped "shoulders" look like the squash bug in my Audubon field guide, but I'm not happy with the ID either. It was large, and a strong flyer.

Handsome is right. That diamond is downright dashing.
We think it is a squash bug, but it might be an assassin bug or a wheel bug. Any ID suggestions?
